Los Angeles will be experiencing an extended period of scorching heat this week, prompting the city to extend the operation of cooling centers through Monday. The Emergency Management Department activated six centers earlier this week, with nearly 400 people utilizing the shelters. These centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at various locations across the city, providing relief from the high temperatures.
In addition to the designated cooling centers, other city recreation and parks facilities, as well as over 70 L.A. City Public Library branches, are available for residents seeking shelter from the heat. City park facilities are pet-friendly with dogs allowed on a leash accompanied by their owners.
As the heatwave continues, regional branch libraries will offer Sunday afternoon hours as cooling centers, and additional locations will be activated if needed. The Emergency Management Department will provide updates on the operation of cooling centers through social media.
Earlier this summer, the department activated cooling centers for 19 days, assisting thousands of residents and animals during the extreme heat. An excessive heat warning is in effect in various areas, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 118 degrees in some locations. This extended period of high temperatures poses a danger to residents, highlighting the importance of staying cool and hydrated during this heatwave.
