Following a green map released by the South Coast Air Quality Management District showing good air quality in Los Angeles County, residents are urged to continue taking precautions outdoors due to a windblown dust and ash advisory until Wednesday evening. Dr. Scott Epstein, air quality assessment manager at AQMD, warned that the presence of ash particles may not be reflected in the Air Quality Index (AQI) map but could still pose health risks. The Los Angeles County Public Health Department also issued a statement cautioning about unhealthy air quality levels in regions impacted by wildfires.
Wildfire ash contains carcinogens that can lead to short- and long-term health problems, such as asthma attacks and breathing difficulties. Residents in areas downwind of recent burn scars are advised to watch out for ash particles and take preventive measures, such as wearing N95 masks and avoiding leaf-blowers to prevent re-inhalation of ash. The best advice is to stay indoors with closed windows and doors when possible. The AQMD continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed to protect public health and safety.
