Biden Declares Chuckwalla National Monument to Safeguard Territory Adjacent to Joshua Tree – Daily News

President Joe Biden designated two sites in California as national monuments to honor Native American tribes and protect mountains and deserts from mining and energy development. The Chuckwalla National Monument in Southern California near Joshua Tree National Park covers 624,000 acres and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument in Northern California covers roughly 225,000 acres near the California-Oregon border. The designations bar drilling and mining activities on the sites. These protected areas are home to rare species of plants and animals and natural wonders like Alligator Rock and the Painted Canyon of Mecca Hills.

The designations follow Biden’s goal to conserve at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 and come after he banned new offshore drilling in most U.S. coastal waters, including California. The president’s actions aim to safeguard the environment and address climate change concerns amid worsening natural disasters. The monuments honor tribal requests and highlight collaboration between Native American tribes and environmental groups in preserving these lands for future generations.
