Shaw Zhao received a heartbreaking call from his father the day before a devastating wildfire took his life in Altadena, California. Zhi Feng Zhao, 84, was one of the 27 victims who perished in the blaze. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Southern California Edison, alleging the utility’s negligence in maintaining equipment that sparked the deadly fire.

Zhi Feng Zhao, a deeply resilient figure who overcame childhood adversity in rural China, instilled in his son Shaw values of fortitude, intelligence, and perseverance that shaped his career as a data scientist. Shaw rushed to Los Angeles upon learning of the fire, but tragically found his father’s remains in the aftermath.

Despite his grief, Shaw is focusing on honoring his father’s memory by planning a memorial and fulfilling his parents’ wishes by dividing their ashes between Rose Hills Memorial Park and Shanghai. He has received support from family, friends, and strangers during this difficult time.

As Shaw prepares to lay his father to rest in Shanghai and continue the memorial celebration in California, he is determined to seek justice for Zhi Feng Zhao and other victims through the lawsuit against Southern California Edison. In remembering his father’s legacy of resilience, Shaw continues to carry forward the valuable lessons and values instilled by Zhi Feng Zhao throughout his life.
