Jessica Pegula overcame a slow start in her first Grand Slam semifinal to defeat Karolina Muchova at the U.S. Open on Thursday night, winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Pegula will face No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the final after Sabalenka beat Emma Navarro 6-3, 7-6 (2). Pegula, a 30-year-old from New York, has been in excellent form, winning 15 of her last 16 matches.
Sabalenka, who was last year’s runner-up at the U.S. Open, displayed her high-risk, high-reward style of play with 34 winners and 34 unforced errors in a thrilling match. The final will be a rematch of last month’s Cincinnati Open final, which Sabalenka won.
In the mixed doubles final, Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defeated Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young 7-6 (0), 7-5. The victory gave Errani her first mixed doubles title to add to her career Grand Slam in women’s doubles and Olympic gold medal.
Young, who is retiring from tennis, played his final match at the U.S. Open. He and Townsend, who have been friends since childhood, received a wildcard entry. Even though they fell short in the final, Young expressed gratitude for the experience of playing at the U.S. Open with someone he has known his whole life.
The U.S. Open has seen intense competition and emotional farewells, with players giving their all in pursuit of victory. The upcoming final between Pegula and Sabalenka promises to be a thrilling display of skill and determination as both players vie for the prestigious title.
