College Gymnast in Wisconsin Fatally Shot, Suspect in Custody

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting death of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnast Kara Welsh following an altercation at a campus-area apartment. The suspect, who knew the victim, has been booked on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety while armed, and disorderly conduct while armed. The killing took place at an off-campus residence about a mile east of the school’s main campus. Welsh, a business management major and national title-winning gymnast, was described as a vault “phenom” with a lasting impact on the community. Memorial services will be announced, and counseling is available for those in need at the university. Flags on campus will fly at half-staff in honor of Welsh. The Whitewater Police Department has not provided additional information about the case. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community is mourning the loss of Welsh and offering support to those affected by the tragedy. Local and national gymnastic organizations have offered condolences to Welsh’s family, friends, and teammates. Whitewater is located about 50 miles west-southwest of Milwaukee.
