The 2023 European Film Awards: Winner Announcement

The 36th European Film Awards (EFAs) are set to take place in Berlin, where the European Film Academy will honour the top achievements in European Cinema. The nominees for Best European Film include Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, which has already received critical acclaim and won major awards at Cannes. The film is a harrowing Holocaust drama that has been selected as the UK’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars in the Best International Feature category.

Another highly-anticipated nominee is Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, an emotionally devastating film about the refugee crisis at the Belarus-Poland border. The film has been the subject of controversy in Poland, with the previous far-right government likening it to “Nazi propaganda”.

The Best Actress category features Sandra Hüller, who is nominated for her roles in both The Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, a Palme d’Or winning courtroom drama. The Best Actor contenders include Mads Mikkelsen and Jussi Vatanen, among others.

In addition to the main awards, the EFAs also include categories for Best Director, Best Documentary, and Best Animated Feature Film. The nominations are based on the votes of 4,600 members of the European Film Academy who have been watching the films included in the annual Academy Selection.

The ceremony promises to be a star-studded event, with glitz and glamour as the top talents in European Cinema come together to celebrate the best of their industry. Viewers can tune in to Euronews Culture for live coverage of the event to find out who will take home the top honours in European Cinema.
