Travel to and from Sicily disrupted due to Mount Etna eruption
Flights to and from Catania international airport in Sicily are currently facing delays and restrictions as a result of a volcanic eruption from Mount Etna. The eruption, which began last night, has caused smoke to billow into the air, affecting visibility for pilots and covering nearby towns in black volcanic ash.
Currently, the airport is limiting arrivals to six per hour, with some departures also experiencing delays. Previous eruptions have seen flights diverted to other airports on the island, such as Palermo and Comiso, but it is unclear if this will be the plan today.
Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for the most up-to-date information on their flights. While no official numbers have been released, delays of 30 minutes to one hour are being reported for some flights. Despite the disruptions, most departures have been on time so far.
Although flights are not currently being diverted, there is a possibility of diversions if the volcanic smoke continues to affect visibility. Travelers are reassured that it is safe to travel to Sicily, with most tourist accommodations operating as normal despite the ongoing eruption of Mount Etna.
