Two devastating wildfires, the Palisades and Eaton, broke out in Los Angeles County on Jan. 7, causing widespread destruction. The Eaton fire destroyed or damaged 7,000 structures over 14,000 acres, while the Palisades fire damaged or destroyed over 5,000 structures across 23,000 acres. Dry weather and strong winds fueled the flames, leading to unprecedented challenges for firefighters. The fires have resulted in 24 deaths and 23 missing individuals.
Investigations into the causes of each fire are ongoing. In the Palisades fire, investigators are looking into a potential point of origin at Skull Rock, while reports suggest it may have reignited from a New Year’s Day fire. The Eaton fire is being linked to a Southern California Edison power line, with lawsuits alleging negligence on the utility’s part.
ATF and SCE are conducting their own investigations, with lawsuits filed against Edison in relation to the Eaton fire. Los Angeles County officials are continuing their investigations into the causes of these devastating wildfires.
