Charlotte Pleytez and Lombardo Palacios were wrongfully convicted of a 2007 murder in East Hollywood and spent more than 17 years in prison before their convictions were vacated. The LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced their exoneration based on a review of evidence. Superior Court Judge William C. Ryan ordered their immediate release, and both Pleytez and Palacios expressed gratitude for their freedom at a news conference. The DA’s office worked with their attorneys and the California Innocence Advocates to secure justice for the pair. The convictions stemmed from a shooting incident in a shopping center parking lot in 2007, and eyewitness identifications led to their arrests. The defense team, supported by the Conviction Review Unit, filed a joint petition to vacate the convictions and find Pleytez and Palacios factually innocent. Hochman plans to seek a finding of factual innocence at a later date. The DA’s office clarified that there is no evidence of misconduct by law enforcement or prosecutors in the case. Hochman expressed condolences to the family of the victim while emphasizing the importance of ensuring justice and honoring victims’ lives.
