Protesters disrupt Tony-winning musical ‘Suffs’ with chants and banner

A performance of the Broadway musical “Suffs,” a Tony Award-winning show about the suffragist movement, was briefly interrupted by protesters who unfurled a banner with the slogan “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chanted “Cancel ‘Suffs!'” The demonstration lasted for about 20 seconds before protesters were removed and the banner was taken down by theater staff.

The show’s representatives stated that the safety of the cast and audience was not compromised during the incident. “Suffs,” written by Shaina Taub and produced by Hillary Clinton, had won two Tonys at the previous month’s award ceremony. The protesters, who identified as radical, anti-racist, queer feminists, criticized the musical for being a “rehashed white feminism” that betrayed the next generation of feminists.

Although the show’s producers did not directly address the group’s complaints, they highlighted the musical’s exploration of racism within the suffragist movement and the contributions of Black women to the fight for voting rights.

This incident marks the second disruption of a Broadway show in recent months, following a protest during a performance of “An Enemy of the People” in March. Climate activists had chanted “No theater on a dead planet” during that demonstration. Despite the interruptions, both shows continued after the protesters were escorted out.
