Firefighters successfully contained a fire in the Torrey Pines Reserve Extension, which had threatened the nearly complete new Del Mar Heights School campus. The school site was used as a staging area, with firefighters and helicopters on scene. At a board meeting, the Del Mar Union School District expressed gratitude to first responders for keeping the area safe.
Construction on the school is almost complete, with teachers expected back in August to set up classrooms for students in the fall. Concerns were raised about wildfire evacuation plans for the new school, but district officials assured that emergency procedures are in place, with evacuation locations identified for each school site.
During the meeting, concerns about run-off into the reserve were addressed, with neighbors reporting excess irrigation water causing erosion. The district adjusted the irrigation schedule to mitigate the issue. Additionally, a balanced budget for the 2024-25 school year was approved, supporting student well-being and success.
The budget includes the implementation of a Transitional Kindergarten Early Intervention program for younger learners, as well as funding for additional school counselors, math and reading intervention teachers, and other priorities. The board approved the budget, with one member voting against it due to concerns about fund allocation.
Updates on the child nutrition services program were shared, highlighting the success of the Universal Meals initiative and efforts to reduce waste, promote healthy eating, and support local farms. Overall, the district has seen positive results in providing meals to students and engaging in sustainable practices.
