Daily News: Kings fall short against Auston Matthews and Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews broke out of a season-opening points drought in a big way, scoring his first goal and adding his first two assists in a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Matthews scored midway through the first period and assisted on two power-play goals as the Maple Leafs won their third straight game. Bobby McMann also contributed with two goals, while Morgan Rielly, William Nylander, and John Tavares added goals. Mitch Marner had three assists in the win. Anthony Stolarz made 32 saves for Toronto.

The Maple Leafs broke a power-play drought to start the season when Nylander scored in the second period. The Kings got goals from Alex Turcotte and Kevin Fiala in the third period, but it was not enough to overcome Toronto’s strong start.

Matthews became the fourth player in Maple Leafs history to score 200 goals on home ice, joining Darryl Sittler, Dave Keon, and Mats Sundin. The Kings will look to bounce back as they play against Montreal next.

Under new coach Craig Berube, the Maple Leafs have shown a focus on defensive accountability, allowing only seven goals in four games. The Kings struggled in this game, with goaltender David Rittich being pulled after allowing four goals on 14 shots.

The Maple Leafs are looking to continue their winning streak as they face their next opponent, while the Kings will aim to regroup and improve their record on their season-opening road trip.
