American Airlines expanding flight routes to Europe in summer of 2025

Airlines are gearing up for the 2025 Europe travel season, with American Airlines announcing new routes to Europe for spring and summer next year. These routes include nonstop service from Chicago to Madrid, Philadelphia to Milan, Philadelphia to Edinburgh, Charlotte to Athens, and Miami to Rome. The airline expects its trans-Atlantic capacity to increase by low-to-mid-single digits over this year, with strong demand for international travel continuing.

American Airlines has seen strong demand for flights to Italy and Greece, with travelers often connecting in Europe to get to Athens. The airline plans to offer four daily nonstops from the U.S. to Athens from various airports, as well as bring back other Europe flights from its Philadelphia hub.

Boeing’s delivery delays of 787 Dreamliners have prompted airlines to rethink their flying plans, leading to American cutting certain international flights that these long-haul airplanes serve. American is also reconfiguring some of its older Boeing 777s to build a bigger business class cabin.

Despite uncertainties in the aircraft delivery world and reconfigurations, American Airlines remains confident in its ability to fly the announced routes for the 2025 Europe travel season. The airline has established backstop plans, such as other hub cities serving Athens, in case any rerouting is necessary. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines are expected to release their 2025 travel plans in the coming weeks.
