Family of U.S. citizen girl recovering from brain surgery after being deported claims civil rights violations

A family with mixed immigration status, including four U.S. citizen children, was deported to Mexico last month. They are now requesting an investigation into alleged abuses they faced in U.S. detention. The Texas Civil Rights Project filed a complaint on their behalf, claiming that Customs and Border Protection denied medical care to a 10-year-old girl recovering from brain surgery, detained the children in deplorable conditions, and placed them in danger in Mexico due to their U.S. citizenship.

The family was arrested at an immigration checkpoint while on their way to a medical checkup in Houston. Both parents were undocumented but had been in the process of obtaining T visas. They were placed in a detention facility with their children before being dropped in Mexico. The 10-year-old girl, who requires follow-up care for her brain surgery, has not been able to access the necessary treatment since the deportation. Her siblings also have serious medical conditions.

The complaint alleges that CBP did not provide proper medical care for the children, including the 10-year-old girl, and subjected them to inappropriate searches during detention. The family is now in an area of Mexico known for kidnapping U.S. citizens, adding to their fears for safety. The parents’ 17-year-old son, a U.S. citizen, was left behind in Texas.

The Trump administration’s border policies have been criticized for targeting families like this one, who contribute to the U.S. economy by working in essential jobs. The family’s attorney and advocates are calling for humanitarian parole so the parents can care for their children’s medical needs and be reunited with their son in the U.S.
