Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduces bill to block Trump’s unauthorized immigrant registry

Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced the “No Round Up Act” on Friday in an effort to prevent the Trump administration from using a World War II-era law to build a registry of undocumented immigrants. The bill would repeal the Alien Registration Act of 1940, which required the fingerprinting and registration of non-citizen adults, and was previously used to justify the forced internment of Japanese Americans. Jayapal and more than 20 Democratic lawmakers hope to prevent history from repeating itself, as the law is now being used by the Trump administration to require undocumented immigrants to register, give fingerprints, and provide an address, potentially leading to mass deportations.

The bill has already received endorsements from organizations such as the ACLU, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, who have criticized Trump’s registry and the targeting of immigrants. The legislation aims to prevent the administration from using policies associated with past discriminatory practices to unfairly target immigrant communities. Jayapal emphasized that the WWII-era law was also connected to the controversial National Security Entry-Exit Registration System under George W. Bush, which led to mass deportations without any terrorism convictions, highlighting the dangers of racial profiling.

The bill aims to protect the rights and dignity of immigrants who have contributed to society and have lived in the U.S. for many years. By repealing the outdated and discriminatory law, Jayapal hopes to prevent the unjust targeting and deportation of undocumented individuals.
