Family seeks answers in the death of a Black man tragically killed in a North Carolina car crash

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is calling for the release of dash and body camera footage related to the death of 31-year-old Black man Tyrone Mason, who died in a single-vehicle accident in North Carolina. Nearly 200 cases involving the state trooper who responded to Mason’s accident were dropped in January, leading to questions about the circumstances surrounding his death. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman placed Trooper Garrett Macario and Sgt. Matthew Morrison on leave after further investigation was requested by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Freeman has not commented on the case, and the footage has not been released publicly. Crump and Mason’s family are seeking justice and want to know what is on the video that led to the dropped cases. Mason’s mother, Henrietta Mason, believes someone was chasing her son before the accident. Records show that Macario and Morrison have been with the patrol for a few years. Crump and the family are adamant about obtaining the footage to uncover the truth surrounding Mason’s death.
