A person of interest has been identified in the disappearance of University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki during a spring break trip in the Dominican Republic. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where she is from, has sent detectives to assist with the U.S. side of the investigation. The Dominican Republic authorities have not confirmed if the individual is a person of interest in their investigation. The FBI is also involved and is assisting international partners on the matter. Konanki disappeared after 4:15 a.m. on March 6, after she was seen entering the beach area of the resort where she was staying with friends. While her friends returned to the hotel, she stayed back with others she had met on the trip. The individual identified as a person of interest in the case was interviewed at length, and authorities emphasize this is still a missing person case and not a criminal matter. The investigation into Konanki’s disappearance is ongoing, and efforts are being made by both U.S. and Dominican Republic authorities to locate her.
