Authorities say that the last place missing University of Pittsburgh student was seen was on a beach with individuals she had met during the trip.

The search for University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing while on spring break in the Dominican Republic, has entered its fifth day. She was last seen on the beach with people she had met during her trip, not with her college friends. Authorities are expanding the search by re-interviewing those who interacted with Konanki, as well as conducting surveys of surveillance footage. There were no signs of blood or aggression found at the beach where she disappeared. Dominican authorities are investigating a report that a wave hit Konanki and caused a situation while she was on the beach. Konanki’s friends did not realize she was missing until later in the day, and there was an electrical issue at the resort during the time she went missing. The investigation is being led by Dominican police, with assistance from the FBI and the U.S. embassy. Search efforts include land and sea searches, helicopters, boats, drones, and K-9 officers. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has filed for a worldwide police alert for a missing person to be issued by INTERPOL. Konanki is described as a brilliant student by a family friend, and there is a plea to expand the search beyond the resort area to the city and town in hopes of finding clues to her whereabouts. The family is hopeful for her safe return.
