The Environmental Protection Agency is making progress in the cleanup efforts following January’s wildfires, with roughly 80% of Phase 1 cleanup completed. This phase involves removing household hazardous materials, with over 8,000 properties already cleared. Phase 2, which involves the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or private contractors removing debris from properties where Phase 1 cleanup is finished, is also underway.
Properties deemed too dangerous for EPA employees are deferred to the Corps of Engineers, with about 3,400 properties falling into this category. The Corps conducts “make safer” operations before completing the cleanup. Properties with unsafe conditions like wall damage or unstable structures are deferred.
Residents can opt-in to the Consolidated Debris Removal Program for government-sponsored cleanup. Information about the cleanup process, including deferred properties, can be found on the EPA’s storymaps. Overall, progress is being made in the cleanup efforts following the devastating wildfires.
