Technology executives encourage agricultural insurance companies to incorporate artificial intelligence and other advancements

At the recent Crop Insurance Industry Convention in Florida, three technology executives emphasized the importance of adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and other new technologies in the crop insurance industry. James Brown, CEO of CropGuard, highlighted that using AI-powered solutions can future-proof businesses, similar to how farmers who used tractors outperformed those who didn’t.

Berend De Jong from Planet Labs discussed the affordability of satellite data services, noting that technology costs have significantly decreased. He suggested that satellite images could potentially replace crop insurance adjusters in the future, improving trust between farmers and insurance companies.

Dominic Edmunds, CEO of PlanetWatchers, emphasized the efficiency gains from using satellite data and AI, stating that automated tasks could reduce agents’ workload by 50%. Despite the industry being government-subsidized and somewhat resistant to new technology, the executives indicated that companies using their data reported a 25% increase in efficiency in the claims process.

However, challenges such as data cleanliness, privacy concerns, and liability issues need to be addressed for successful integration of new technologies. The executives highlighted the importance of user-friendly technology and educating farmers about its benefits.

While there is a plethora of new technology products in the market, crop insurance executives expressed concerns about potential competition. Overall, implementing AI and satellite data solutions in the crop insurance industry can lead to improved efficiency, trust, and better risk assessment.
