RSF attacks in Sudan result in numerous casualties as force readies political charter

Attacks by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people in White Nile state over the past three days. The RSF, a paramilitary group, controls most of western Sudan and parts of Khartoum but has been losing territory in central Sudan to the army. The conflict has led to what the UN has called the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with both sides accused of human rights violations and the US determining that the RSF has committed genocide in areas it controls.

The RSF has been attempting to sign a political charter in Nairobi that would establish a “Government of Peace and Unity” to govern the territories under its control. However, the signing of the charter was postponed to allow for more representation from rebel leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu’s SPLM-N, a secular military faction that controls South Kordofan. The alliance between the RSF and SPLM-N could bolster the paramilitary group’s territory and numbers, but there are concerns about external powers influencing the conflict, with the UAE denying accusations of supporting the RSF.

The situation in Sudan remains volatile, with ongoing violence and political maneuvering shaping the course of the conflict. The delayed signing of the charter highlights the complexities of the situation and the challenges ahead in achieving peace and stability in the region.
