Wyoming woman in hospital with avian flu virus

An older woman in southeast Wyoming has been hospitalized with bird flu, becoming the state’s first human case of Type A H5N1 influenza. The woman had a backyard flock of chickens that died, leading health officials to believe she had direct contact with the infected birds. Despite this case, the state health officer and state epidemiologist reassured Wyoming residents not to be overly concerned as most human cases of bird flu in the U.S. have presented with mild symptoms. However, the woman’s case has been more serious. Researchers believe that the number of reported infections in the U.S. is likely an undercount, with nearly 70 cases reported in the last year. A recent CDC study showed that bird flu has spread from animals to some veterinarians, highlighting the potential risks of exposure. Bird flu has been spreading in wild birds in the U.S. since 2022 and was detected in U.S. dairy cows last year, infecting over 960 cattle herds in 16 states. The woman with bird flu in Wyoming also has other health conditions and is being treated in another state.
