Former ‘Top Chef’ contestant Claudette Zepeda is eager to showcase her culinary skills in San Diego once more- San Diego Union-Tribune


Renowned chef Claudette Zepeda, known for her appearances on various food television shows and global culinary events, is set to open a new restaurant in her hometown of San Diego. Zepeda, who has trained with James Beard Award winner Gavin Kaysen and served as chef de cuisine at Bracero in Little Italy, will be opening Leu Leu by Claudette Zepeda in Leucadia with an all-female culinary team of Mexican heritage.

The lounge, with a feminine and inclusive vibe, will feature shared plates served in vintage Pyrex and locally-made ceramic dishes. The menu will include dishes inspired by Zepeda’s culinary experiences and travels, such as Baja yellowtail crudo and a unique “masa ball soup” with a hybrid dumpling made of masa harina and matzo meal. The wine program will focus on female winemakers and owners, with a champagne and caviar program coming soon.

Co-owner Brittany Carrales-Schmitt describes the restaurant’s design as eclectic, cozy, and community-centered, honoring Leucadia’s past and present. Zepeda’s commitment to the project is evident in her requirement to include her name on the restaurant’s sign, symbolizing her equal footing with her male counterparts in the culinary industry.

Leu Leu by Claudette Zepeda will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. Reservations will officially open on Sunday, and the restaurant can be found at 466 N. Coast Hwy 101 in Encinitas. The menu is designed for a cocktail party mode, featuring finger foods, savory dips, and unique culinary creations that reflect Zepeda’s passion for cooking and community engagement.
