UCLA favored to receive top seed in NCAA tournament

The NCAA women’s basketball selection committee revealed the top 16 seeds for the tournament, with UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Notre Dame as the No. 1 seeds. The top 16 teams will host first- and second-round games, with regional rounds played at neutral sites in Spokane, Wash., and Birmingham, Ala. UCLA and Notre Dame were projected as the top seeds in the Spokane Regional, while South Carolina and Texas were in the Birmingham region.

LSU was moved to ensure that the top four teams in a conference are in different regions. There were six SEC schools in the top 16, with USC just outside the top four. Texas was chosen over Notre Dame as the third overall No. 1 seed due to their 10 wins over top teams compared to Notre Dame’s six.

The Final Four will take place in Tampa, Fla., on April 4, with the championship game two days later. The NCAA has been doing in-season reveals since 2015, with one more reveal on Feb. 27 before the final seedings are announced on March 16. The reveal did not factor in games scheduled for that day, leaving room for potential changes in the rankings based on Sunday’s games.

The committee chair, Derita Dawkins, mentioned the excitement around big games like South Carolina hosting UConn and Texas visiting LSU, anticipating potential upsets that could shake up the bracket. Overall, the seeds provide an early look at potential matchups and highlight the top teams to watch as the tournament approaches.
