Trump officials to travel to Saudi Arabia for negotiations on Russia-Ukraine peace accord

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff are traveling to Saudi Arabia to initiate negotiations for peace between Russia and Ukraine. The trip comes after President Trump spoke with Putin and Zelenskyy about starting negotiations to end the war. Senior administration officials are currently at the Munich Security Conference discussing the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine must be involved in any negotiations for peace. Special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg defended engaging with Putin for peace talks, stating that negotiations should focus on Russia ceding territory and targeting Putin’s oil revenue.

While some members of the administration have been reluctant to name specific concessions from Russia, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hinted that Ukraine may need to cede some territory to achieve peace. Trump stated that it is too early to determine what might happen in negotiations and the outcome will depend on Russia’s actions. Hegseth also suggested that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders may be an unrealistic goal, indicating a potential shift in U.S. support for Ukraine joining NATO as part of the peace negotiations. The administration is focused on negotiating a deal that will lead to a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine, potentially involving ceding some territory in exchange for peace.
