Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash inside a tunnel on Interstate 80 in Green River, Wyoming. The crash resulted in injuries to others, but details were not yet available. The tunnel was evacuated and the highway shut down in both directions as authorities responded to the pileup. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a multivehicle pileup with an active fire and explosion threat. Governor Mark Gordon called the crash a tragedy and stated that there was no estimate for when the roadway would reopen as highway personnel inspected the tunnel for damage. The region was under a National Weather Service hazardous weather outlook calling for snow, which may have contributed to the slippery road conditions. The city of Green River has a population of over 11,000 and is located in the southwest corner of Wyoming. The crash is still under investigation and representatives of the local hospital and medical examiner have not yet provided information on the number of injured individuals. Gov. Gordon has directed agencies to work with local communities to offer aid and assistance to those affected by the crash.
