TikTok, the popular social media app operated by Chinese technology firm ByteDance, has returned to the Apple and Google app stores in the U.S. after President Donald Trump delayed the enforcement of a ban. The app was removed from the stores on Jan. 18 to comply with a law that required ByteDance to divest the app or face a ban in the U.S. Following assurances from Trump, the app was temporarily suspended, leading some users to migrate to a different Chinese social media platform. After nearly a month, TikTok is now available for download again in the U.S. following a new executive order from Trump extending the ban to April 5. Despite facing claims of being a national security risk due to its Chinese ownership, TikTok denies sharing U.S. user data and argues that the law requiring divestment or a ban violates the First Amendment rights of its users. Trump, who initially supported banning TikTok, has suggested joint American ownership, with potential buyers including real estate mogul Frank McCourt, Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary, and YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson. TikTok CEO Shou Chew even attended Trump’s inauguration ceremony, showing the complex relationship between the app and the U.S. government.
