Officials believe NYC art dealer was murdered in Brazil in a plot orchestrated by her estranged husband

Daniel Sikkema, a New York man, was indicted for allegedly hiring someone to kill his estranged husband, wealthy art dealer Brent Sikkema, in Brazil. Brent Sikkema was found dead with 18 stab wounds in his Rio home in January 2024. Daniel Sikkema was charged with murder-for-hire resulting in death, murder-for-hire conspiracy resulting in death, conspiracy to murder and maim a person in a foreign country, and passport fraud. The indictment alleges that he hired an individual, referred to as “CC-1,” to kill Brent Sikkema and made payments to facilitate the murder. CC-1 was arrested in Brazil for his involvement in the murder. Daniel Sikkema pleaded not guilty to the charges and faces a mandatory penalty of life in prison or death if convicted. Brent Sikkema was co-owner of a prominent art gallery in Manhattan, previously named Sikkema Jenkins & Co., which changed its name to Sikkema Malloy Jenkins earlier this year. The gallery was founded in 1991 by Brent Sikkema and is known for its presence in both Soho and Chelsea. U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon stated that her office will pursue justice against those who harm U.S. citizens, whether at home or abroad.
