Trump Creates ‘Make America Healthy Again’ Commission Following Kennedy’s Confirmation

President Donald Trump has established the Make America Healthy Again Commission, chaired by recently confirmed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to address chronic diseases. The commission includes high-ranking federal officials from various health organizations. Public health experts are concerned about Kennedy’s past as an alternative health figure and fear he may promote anti-vaccine agendas. There are also concerns about potential cuts to health research funding.

Kennedy has suggested shifting focus from infectious diseases to studying the origins of chronic diseases and stricter regulations on food additives and environmental chemicals. The executive order calls for a national effort to reduce rates of chronic diseases like cancer, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and autism spectrum disorders. The order aims to eliminate conflicts of interest in health research, support research into the root causes of illness, and ensure the U.S. has the healthiest and most affordable food.

The commission has 100 days to submit a report on childhood health issues, including the overutilization of medication, food ingredients, chemicals, and the prevalence of prescribing certain drugs to children. In 180 days, the commission must submit a strategy to restructure the federal government’s response to chronic diseases in children and end practices that worsen the health crisis. The executive order reflects Kennedy’s priorities and concerns in his confirmation hearings.
