Israel warns of heightened conflict in Gaza if Hamas does not release hostages

Israel has threatened to resume intense military operations in and around Gaza if Hamas does not release three hostages by noon on Saturday. The ceasefire agreement, which was close to collapse earlier this week, is currently in its first phase with Hamas having released 16 of 33 hostages. The hostage crisis began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants seized 251 people during a terrorist attack. President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza and redevelop the area has intensified tensions in the region. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that “the gates of hell will open” if Hamas does not release any more captives. Arab leaders have stepped in to mediate the standoff and have called for an emergency Arab summit to address the situation. Egypt has expressed willingness to work with Trump to achieve a just settlement of the Palestinian cause. The release of the hostages is crucial to maintaining the fragile ceasefire agreement, and both Israel and Hamas have been negotiating through Egyptian and Qatari mediators. The international community is closely monitoring the situation as tensions escalate in the region.
