Barco pesquero acude al rescate de aviadores tras estrellarse un jet de la Marina en la bahía de San Diego – San Diego Union-Tribune

Two aviators were rescued unharmed from San Diego Bay by the crew of a fishing boat after their Navy plane crashed near Shelter Island. The incident occurred when the crew was executing an “around-the-horn” maneuver at North Island Naval Air Station. The aviators ejected from the plane before it plummeted into the water. They were quickly recovered and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Captain Brandon Viets and his crew were on a fishing trip with clients when they witnessed the plane crash. They immediately rushed to the scene and rescued the aviators from the water. The aviators were then transferred to a Customs and Border Protection boat before being taken to shore. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The plane, an EA-18G Growler, assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 135 from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, was used for electronic warfare. Witnesses reported seeing the pilots eject from the plane before it circled back and crashed into the bay.

The Navy has launched an emergency response operation at the crash site. The area around the accident was closed off to sailors, and efforts to contain debris and potential environmental spills were underway. The recovery teams faced challenging conditions of rough waves and winds during the cleanup operation.

The incident has led to a temporary suspension of water activities in the affected area, as officials work to secure the crash site and determine the cause of the accident. Residents and visitors in the vicinity have been advised to avoid the water until further notice.
