Sweetwater Reservoir Contaminated with Additional Industrial Chemicals: South County Report

Sweetwater Authority, responsible for supplying drinking water to around 200,000 customers in Chula Vista and surrounding areas, found elevated levels of a toxic industrial chemical, PFAS, in their main reservoir. The EPA has designated one of the chemicals found, PFOA, as a hazardous substance posing a substantial danger to public health. Treatment to remove these chemicals could cost at least $40 million, with the option to blend reservoir water with cleaner water from an outside agency costing up to $10 million per year.

The cause of the contamination is still unknown, but Sweetwater Authority is working to confirm the levels of PFAS in the reservoir through further testing and planning to address the issue by 2029 if levels exceed federal guidelines. Additionally, the agency will hold public outreach meetings this month to discuss the presence of PFAS chemicals in drinking water.

In Lincoln Acres, an unincorporated community surrounded by National City, residents are concerned about the possibility of being annexed by National City. National City Councilmember Marcus Bush confirmed discussions about annexation, citing confusion in law enforcement response due to the border between the two areas. Residents are planning an emergency meeting to discuss and potentially oppose annexation, fearing the loss of their community’s history and identity.

Meanwhile, the Chula Vista City Council will consider allowing a development project to convert planned single-family homes into multifamily units, while the city continues to face legal challenges in awarding cannabis licenses. National City is also looking to renegotiate a service agreement with the Port of San Diego.
