Northern U.S. hit with heavy snow and arctic temperatures from winter storm systems

Two more storm systems are expected to hit the northern United States this week. The first system will bring snow to the Plains and heavy rain to the south, with Kansas expected to receive 2 to 5 inches of snow. This system will then expand east, bringing 3 to 6 inches of snow to Virginia, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware. The next storm system will follow, bringing more rain and snow to the Plains and Midwest before hitting the Northeast. Arctic air will also bring temperatures 10 to 40 degrees below average across the Plains and Rockies, with Montana and the Dakotas facing temperatures below zero and wind chills as low as minus 40 degrees.

The National Weather Service is celebrating its 155th birthday as these severe storms hit. In the Northeast, more than 230 flights have been canceled due to the storm. Winter alerts have been dropped, but some lingering snow showers are expected. The NOAA forecasts colder than usual temperatures across the northern United States for the next one to two weeks. Overall, residents should expect cold temperatures and continued snowfall in the coming days.
