Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin, who holds the record for the most World Cup victories in skiing with 99 wins, will be returning to the Alpine Ski World Cup on Jan. 30 after being sidelined since November due to a puncture wound in her abdomen. The injury, described as a stab wound by Shiffrin, occurred during a crash in Vermont while she was competing for her 100th World Cup win. The U.S. Ski team coach has described Shiffrin’s recovery as complicated due to the nature of the injury, which is unlike anything many have dealt with before. This is the second consecutive season that Shiffrin has had to miss significant time due to injury, as she also missed six weeks last season recovering from a knee injury sustained in a crash in Italy. Shiffrin, who has been competing in the World Cup circuit since 2011, has five overall titles and 11 discipline titles throughout her career. Her most successful discipline is slalom, in which she has eight titles. Additionally, Shiffrin has seven gold medals in the Alpine Ski World Championships and has participated in three Olympic Games, most recently in Beijing in 2022 where she did not medal.
