Residents in the Val Verde community, near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic, are expressing concerns over the toxic odors emitted by the landfill, impacting the health of children like 8-year-old Kailand Green. Kailand and her grandmother have experienced headaches, respiratory issues, and stomach aches due to the foul odors. The landfill operators have been cited for violating the Clean Air Act by emitting toxic gases such as benzene and volatile organic compounds. Despite ceasing waste acceptance on January 1, 2025, the emissions continue, prompting parents to push for a state of emergency declaration by the county to relocate schools away from the harmful odors. Concerned parents are urging the Castaic Union School District to prioritize the health and safety of their children by relocating them to alternate facilities until the issue is resolved. Superintendent Bob Brauneisen has been contacted for a response but has not responded. Parents like Jennifer Elkins are advocating for the school board to take action to protect the children from the hazardous air quality near the landfill.
