Ben Shelton advances to semifinals after defeating Lorenzo Sonego – Daily News

American Ben Shelton, seeded 21st, advanced to the Australian Open semifinals after defeating unseeded Lorenzo Sonego in a thrilling match. Despite Sonego’s spectacular shots, including a highlight-reel volley, Shelton’s powerful forehands and improved return game secured his victory. The 22-year-old Shelton impressed the crowd with his athleticism, including doing push-ups after a tumble and diving for seemingly unreachable balls.

Shelton, coached by his former tour pro father, will face either top-seeded Jannik Sinner or No. 8 Alex de Minaur in the semifinals. With 26 forehand winners and a strong serving game, Shelton demonstrated his determination to reach the final four at the Australian Open for the first time.

In the other men’s semifinal, it will be Novak Djokovic against Alexander Zverev. Meanwhile, the women’s semifinals will feature Aryna Sabalenka, Paula Badosa, Iga Swiatek, and Madison Keys. The crowd-pleasing performances by Shelton and Sonego added excitement to the tournament, showcasing the talent and athleticism on display at the Australian Open.
