Santa Anita’s California Cup Day this year was a special tribute to the late Don Valpredo, a beloved figure in the state’s horse racing industry. The event featured races named in his honor, with two of them won by horses owned by his family. Shocking Grey, a mare bred by Valpredo, claimed victory in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint. Another horse bred by Valpredo, Mayakama, also clinched a win in the earlier races.
The highlight of the day was the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint, which was won by Big City Lights. Jockey Antonio Fresu had a successful day, securing three wins overall, including Shocking Grey’s triumph. Despite a disqualification in one race, favorites prevailed in three out of the five Cal Cup stakes.
The postponement of Cal Cup Day due to wildfires allowed for some changes in the lineup, leading to unexpected victories. Shocking Grey’s win may increase her value as she is set to be part of a dispersal auction. Trainer Jeff Mullins credited the mare’s improvement to strategic tactics and Fresu’s skilled riding.
The day was emotional for Valpredo’s family, with his daughter expressing gratitude for the opportunity to honor his memory with the wins. The event highlighted not only the talent of California’s native racehorses but also the enduring legacy of individuals like Valpredo who have made significant contributions to the sport.
