Prep talk: Garfield’s new football coach Patrick Vargas aims high


Former Garfield High School quarterback Patrick Vargas has come full circle by returning to his alma mater as the new football coach. Vargas, who led Garfield to a surprising victory over powerhouse Birmingham in 2008, is excited to take on this new role and continue the tradition of excellence at the school.

Having grown up in East L.A., Vargas sees coaching at Garfield as a dream come true. He credits former coach Lorenzo Hernandez for improving the program and hopes to build on that success by taking the team to new heights. Vargas will also have the opportunity to lead the team on a brand-new turf football field that is currently under construction.

On the girls’ side, Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura has been named the Gatorade state player of the year in cross country for the third consecutive year. These positive stories highlight the achievements and successes of high school athletes, showing the dedication and talent that can be found in high school sports.
