The Prime Minister of Pakistan has ordered an investigation into an ad by Pakistan International Airlines that was criticized for resembling the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The ad showed a plane flying towards the Eiffel Tower with the tagline “Paris, we’re coming today,” and received backlash on social media for evoking imagery from the 9/11 attacks. The airline has not publicly commented on the ad. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an inquiry into the controversy, describing the ad as “stupidity.” Pakistan has a history of struggling with domestic terrorism and harboring terrorists like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Osama bin Laden. PIA flights to the EU were suspended in 2020 over safety concerns after pilots were found to have cheated on exams. The airline remains banned in the US and UK. Sharif has expressed hope that resuming flights to the EU will help improve the airline’s image. The investigation into the controversial ad aims to address the public backlash and ensure better oversight in the future.
