The Los Angeles fires have caused devastation, claiming 25 lives and destroying over 12,000 structures. While many are grateful for any efforts to save lives and properties, some have criticized business owners and celebrities for hiring private fire crews to protect their properties. However, this move actually reduces the burden on public agencies and can benefit the community as a whole.
California’s onerous fire-clearance regulations have made it difficult for private firefighters to operate in the state, leading many to leave. Firefighter unions are also resistant to outside help, preferring to have local residents rely on union crews during emergencies. The high salaries and pensions paid to union firefighters contribute to the shortage of firefighters in agencies like Los Angeles.
Increasing the use of private firefighters and resources could improve firefighting efforts in California. However, the dominance of unions and politicians in the system makes it difficult for changes to be implemented. After the fires are extinguished, municipalities should consider the benefits of utilizing private resources for firefighting.
