Former Olympic swimmer Gary Hall Jr. was forced to leave behind his ten Olympic medals during the Palisades fire in Los Angeles. As the flames approached his home, he grabbed his dog, insulin, and a few mementos, leaving everything else behind. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that they will provide Hall Jr. with replicas of all ten medals. IOC President Thomas Bach expressed solidarity with the citizens of Los Angeles and admiration for the firefighters’ efforts.
Hall Jr. expressed gratitude towards the IOC and the swimming community for their support. Despite his accomplishments, he had never displayed his Olympic memorabilia at home and referred to his medals as “souvenirs from an incredible experience.” He emphasized that the medals did not define him, and losing them has been easier to accept because of his attitude.
In the aftermath of the fire, Hall Jr. received numerous messages of support from Olympians, swimmers, and athletes from other sports. He noted the importance of having a supportive family during challenging times. Despite the loss of his medals, Hall Jr. remains grateful for the outpouring of support and the sense of community he has experienced.
