Los Angeles County schools are set to reopen on Monday after being closed due to poor air quality caused by wildfires. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced that all schools and offices would reopen, except for those in mandatory evacuation zones. Schools will operate on a full inclement weather schedule to limit outdoor activities.
Despite progress in containing the fires, many areas are still under mandatory evacuation orders, and some schools have been damaged or destroyed. The Pasadena Unified School District will remain closed until January 17 due to the Eaton fire, while Arcadia Unified Schools will reopen on Monday. La Cañada Unified School District will be closed until January 14, and Malibu schools will also remain closed on Monday.
Superintendent Carvalho emphasized the need for empathy and support for students returning to school after witnessing unprecedented destruction. A feeding distribution center will be opened at Webster Middle School, and a Wildfire Recovery Fund has been launched to assist impacted students, families, and educators. Parents can contact their schools for more information on closures.
