Italian authorities release Iranian citizen detained on US warrant for alleged involvement in drone attack in Jordan.

Italy has released an Iranian citizen, Mohammad Abedini, who was wanted by the U.S. over a drone attack in Jordan that killed three Americans. Abedini has returned to Iran after Italian Justice Minister requested a court to revoke his arrest. He was originally scheduled to appear at a Milan court for extradition to the U.S. but has since been released due to lack of corresponding crimes under Italian law. Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was detained in Iran as a bargaining chip for Abedini’s release, has also returned home. The U.S. Justice Department accused Abedini of supplying drone technology to Iran for the 2024 attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan. The Italian Justice Ministry indicated that the potential charge against Abedini did not match Italian law as a crime. Iranian state TV stated that Abedini’s release came after Iran’s foreign ministry pursued the case and intelligence agencies from both countries were involved in talks. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni described a “diplomatic triangulation” with Iran and the U.S. as instrumental in securing Sala’s release, confirming negotiations also involved U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Meloni’s trip to Florida to meet with Trump resulted in Sala’s release.
