Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called a special session of state lawmakers to help implement President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for a swift crackdown on immigration. Trump is set to issue over 100 executive orders on his first day in office that focus on border security and deportations. DeSantis aims to have state laws in place to support these policies immediately after Trump is inaugurated.
The special session, scheduled for the week of January 27, will focus on providing additional duties and funding for local officials to enforce immigration laws. DeSantis is prepared to suspend elected officials who do not comply with the new mandates and may even deploy the Florida National Guard for enforcement measures. He also plans to allocate tens of millions of dollars to support enforcement and detention efforts.
In addition to immigration-related legislation, DeSantis is calling on lawmakers to address hurricane relief, condominium market reforms, and changes to the citizen ballot initiative process. The governor is focused on ensuring that Florida does not have any incentives for illegal immigration and is committed to holding violators accountable.
