The NBA has postponed multiple games scheduled in Southern California due to ongoing wildfires, including matchups between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, as well as the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers. The league’s decision is aimed at preventing resources from being diverted from wildfire response efforts. In light of the situation, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association are donating one million dollars for immediate relief to organizations like the American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen. The league is also planning longer-term assistance and rebuilding efforts in collaboration with the Lakers and Clippers.
The wildfires have directly impacted NBA coaches, with Lakers coach JJ Redick revealing that his family lost their rented home to the flames, resulting in the loss of all their possessions. Similarly, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr shared that his childhood home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed, along with many homes in the neighborhood. The league is closely monitoring the situation and has postponed additional games, such as the Rockets-Hawks matchup, due to icy weather conditions in Atlanta.
The Hornets-Lakers game scheduled for Thursday was also postponed, with makeup dates for all postponed games yet to be announced. The NBA is prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the wildfires and extreme weather conditions, while actively exploring ways to assist those in need during these challenging times.
