Wildfires in Los Angeles have caused significant disruptions in the local sports schedule. After the NFL playoff game between the Rams and the Cardinals was moved to Arizona, the Big Ten announced that Northwestern women’s basketball team would not travel to Los Angeles for games against UCLA and USC due to concerns about the wildfires. The Palisades fire, located near UCLA’s campus, has claimed over 21,000 acres and resulted in five deaths.
The games have not been canceled but will likely be rescheduled. UCLA and USC, two top women’s basketball programs, will have to adjust their schedules accordingly. UCLA will host Penn State on January 15 instead of playing Northwestern, while USC will have a seven-day break before facing Penn State at home on January 12.
Coaches and officials expressed gratitude for the first responders and the community’s resilience in the face of the wildfires. Despite the disruptions, there is confidence that Angelenos will come back stronger.
