The death toll from wildfires in Los Angeles has risen to 10, with 180,000 people evacuated and at least 10,000 structures destroyed. The fires have been fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and months of drought, causing widespread devastation. Despite efforts by firefighters to contain the blazes, containment remains far out of reach. The fires have also led to looting in Santa Monica, with a curfew being declared and at least 20 arrests made. The costliest insured losses are estimated to be in excess of $8 billion, with analysts expecting the total losses to reach up to $10 billion. European insurers are also trading lower in response to the disaster. Prominent right-wing figures are spreading bigoted criticism and misinformation about the wildfires, including false claims about the diversity within the Los Angeles fire department being to blame for the devastation. The misinformation is hindering emergency response efforts and confusing residents.
