Former FBI informant receives 6-year prison sentence for lying about Bidens – Daily News

Alexander Smirnov, a former Calabasas resident and ex-FBI informant, has been sentenced to six years in prison for fabricating a story about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter taking bribes from a Ukrainian energy company. Smirnov, who now lives in Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to creating a false record in a federal investigation and tax evasion charges.

The 44-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen falsely claimed that the Bidens received $5 million each from Burisma, where Hunter Biden worked as an attorney and board member. Despite no evidence to support these allegations, some Republicans used them in attempts to impeach President Biden.

In addition to his prison sentence, Smirnov must pay $675,502 in restitution to the IRS for tax evasion and will be on supervised release for one year after his release. His attorneys had requested a maximum of four years in prison.

This case highlights the dangers of spreading false information and the consequences it can have on public discourse. By perpetuating unfounded claims, individuals like Smirnov can manipulate public opinion and contribute to the erosion of trust in political institutions. Smirnov’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it and the accountability that comes with spreading false narratives.
