Greeneville City Council has decided to purchase the Greeneville-Greene County Center For Technology using debt service money allocated for school debt. The decision came after a lengthy discussion about different options presented by City Manager Todd Smith, with Mayor Cal Doty expressing concerns about the financial feasibility of the purchase. Despite some council members questioning the decision and suggesting alternative options for collaboration between the city and county school systems, the vote to purchase the property was unanimous.
Director of Schools Steve Starnes assured the council that they can operate the school moving forward with cuts, with plans to reduce the number of programs from 11 to 7. The City School Systems also plan to relocate the school bus operations to the Center For Technology location, utilizing funds from the school system budget.
Following the meeting, council member Matt Hensley reiterated his commitment to providing the best for the students despite his vote to approve the purchase option. The discussions highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding the future of the technology center and the need for collaborative efforts between the city and county for the betterment of both education systems.
